The history of ASG

In 2022, H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, envisioned a graduate institution that would redefine public policy and leadership education in Africa. Their goal was to nurture a new generation of purpose-driven leaders equipped to shape Africa’s future with confidence, innovation, and impact.

Later that year, a distinguished advisory group refined the concept, giving rise to the African School of Governance (ASG). In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, a dedicated team worked with technical experts to design ASG’s strategic and business model—laying the foundation for an institution built on excellence, relevance, and pan-African collaboration.

This initiative emerged from a clear need: to bridge the gap between policy design and implementation across the continent. ASG is driven by the conviction that Africa’s progress depends on leaders who combine evidence-based policymaking, strategic thinking, and transformative leadership to craft home-grown solutions and shape Africa’s role in global affairs.

Accreditation and Partnerships

The African School of Governance (ASG) is officially accredited and has been granted legal personality by the Government of Rwanda under Ministerial Order Nº 001/MINEDUC/2025, effective 6 January 2025. This accreditation affirms the excellence and integrity of our academic programmes, empowering ASG to deliver transformative education in public policy, leadership, and governance.

ASG’s strategic partnerships with leading institutions strengthen the quality, diversity, and global relevance of our offerings. We are proud to collaborate with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) at the National University of Singapore, one of the world’s foremost schools of public policy.

Looking ahead, ASG will continue to expand its international collaborations, building networks with other top institutions worldwide to ensure our students and faculty remain connected to a global community of excellence, innovation, and impact.
